Thread Safe libxml2 for iOS
My self-built framework for accessing Last.fm data does a lot of XML-parsing. I could have chosen for JSON, I guess, but I started of with XML and somehow stuck with it because changing it over seems like a waste of time to me.
That is, if my XML parsing is fast enough. With the successor of Last Concerts comes even more data fetching from Last.fm and thus more data parsing, and so performance...

Fosdem 2012
Every year I find enough reasons to take out a chunk of my valuable time and get my butt over to Brussels to attend some talks at FOSDEM. This time it was the talk about how to implement domain-specific languages with LLVM that got me interested the most. LLVM is one of the most interesting open source projects to me and this talk did not disappoint: technical enough but not over my head, and with...

Discontinuing Last Concerts
There are two projects that I hope to finish in this year. Both of them are top secret. Just kidding, of course. I am a believer of the idea that ideas are not valuable as such, and the worth of it is mostly in the execution of them.
But that does not mean that it is a good idea to just announce every idea in the open from the moment you start working on it. My friend T. kept his iOS-project...
2012 - A New Challenge
In the end one grows tired of all the motivational texts that reach you through social media. You know the inspirational mantras that people like to spread while doing a daytime job they do not care much about. “Look yourself in the mirror every day and wonder if this is what you really want to do”. “Fail, fail again, fail better”. “Your ideas are only worth so much,...

Is There A Future For Last.fm?
It has been clear for a while now that getting the dollars of the music lovers on the internet is a war being fought on two fronts. There are streaming services like Spotify on one end and there is the iTunes digital Music Store on the other end. So far the latter has been the one pushing boundaries but it looks like the action is moving towards the streaming services.
iTunes is now in the...

Back To Cursing
My story about Steve Jobs is not all that spectacular. I wasn’t going to write it at first, but yet here I am. I guess I have to admit that I will miss the world I used to know, the world in which he was present, more than I thought I would.
When I started my first job it was a programmer’s job on Mac OS at a company called Artwork Systems. They were among the first companies that...

Trying to boost the sales
People ask: what are the sales of Last Concerts like? The answer basically is: depressing. Let me be blunt about it. Since the launch of version 2.0, now one month ago, I have been selling 17 copies. That makes that Apple owes me 18.05 euros according to iTunes Connect. Party time.
Surely I am doing a lot of things wrong. It can’t be just one thing, right?
My guess as a programmer is always...

Last Concerts 2.0 Released
So I released Last Concerts 2.0. It is on the iTunes store, the website has been updated and I am trying to create some buzz about this release. Doing the press release dance, adding a Facebook page and shareable videos and all that bonanza.
This is the part of the job that I have neglected with previous versions and am determined not to neglect this time around. As a matter of fact, I have set...

Last Concerts v1.5
I am pleased to announce that Last Concerts version 1.5 is out. This is a feature version with detailed views for events, shouts, attendees and photos. I think you will enjoy it.
There are still two crash bugs outstanding that one of the beta testers pointed out to me. I am looking into that. If you run into any of them, be patient, an update will follow soon.
Many of you have downloaded the...

Excellent Git-client. Beta-testing (and using) right now. It’s a pity GitX is not actively developed, but that means more money to Tower I guess.

Copland 2010 revisited: Apple's language and API...
Brilliant article by John Siracusa. Favorite quote:
And so continues one of the biggest constants in software development: the unerring sense among developers that the level of abstraction they’re current working at is exactly the right one for the task at hand. Anything lower-level is seen as barbaric, and anything higher-level is a bloated, slow waste of resources. This remains true even...

Announcing Last Concerts
My first iPhone application is about to launch and blogging will be done here, with the tag “lastconcerts”.
Consider this an announcement. The URL for the application will be http://www.lastconcerts.com/ but there is nothing there yet now. By tonight there might be.
When it will appear in the App Store is still unknown at the time being.
